How fuel charges and refunds work

The cost of fuel is not included when you book your rental:

• If you return the car with less fuel than when you picked it up, you will be charged for the missing fuel and refill fees.
• If you return the car with more fuel than when you picked it up, you’re eligible for a refund.

Fuel charges and refunds are based on our frequently updated fuel prices.

Getaround Connect Rentals

Depending on the type of car you rented, the process for recording fuel levels is different. In some cars, the Connect box is able to automatically read the car’s live fuel level. In others, this isn’t possible and fuel is managed without the help of Getaround Connect.

Getaround Connect automatic readings

In most cars equipped with Getaround Connect, the Connect box is able to read the car’s fuel level automatically.

During the pickup and return process:

• You will be asked to take a clear photo of the fuel gauge to be used as a reference.
• You’ll see the fuel level reading from the Connect box, and asked if it matches the car’s gauge. Keep in mind that hardware gauges in cars can sometimes lack the ability to display a precise fuel level, whereas Connect will show you a reading as a percentage.
• If you notice a discrepancy between the Connect reading and the car’s gauge, you can report it during the pickup and return process.

After the rental

• If you reported an inconsistency, it will be reviewed by our team. Firstly, to ensure that you’re fairly compensated or charged for extra or missing fuel. Secondly, to ensure cars with fuel reading issues are fixed.
• If you didn’t report an inconsistency, and there is a difference between the pickup and return fuel levels, Getaround will proceed to automatically charge or refund you based on our fuel prices.

Getaround Connect with manual readings

In some cases, the Getaround Connect box is not able to read the car’s fuel levels automatically, so fuel is managed differently.

During the pickup and return process:

• As always, you will be asked to take a clear photo of the fuel gauge to be used as a reference.
• You will be asked to look at the car’s fuel gauge, and input a fuel level in the app

In the two days following the rental:

• If you returned the car with more fuel, you can ask the car owner for a refund for the extra fuel you left in the tank. You can do this from the rental page.
• The owner will be notified of your request. If they accept it, the amount will be refunded to you and charged to the owner. If the owner disputes your request, it will be moderated by the Getaround team who will use your photos to make an accurate assessment of fuel levels, and apply the correct charge.

Rentals without Getaround Connect

Meet Owner

For most rentals without Connect, you’ll be asked to complete the rental contact on your phone when you pickup and return the car.

During the pickup and return process:

• You will be asked to take a clear photo of the fuel gauge to be used as a reference.
• You will be asked to input a fuel level

In the days following the rental

• If we have all of the information needed, an automatic fuel adjustment will be performed based on the fuel level that you gave during the pickup and return flow. If the owner doesn’t agree, they will reach out to us and we can adjust the charge as needed.
• If we’re missing some technical information to make this automatic adjustment, you’ll be able to request it from the rental page in the two days following your rental.

Paper agreement

If you rented a car using a paper rental contract, requests for fuel adjustments must be made within 2 business days of the end of the rental. This can be done from the rental page.

After 2 business days, it will no longer be possible to request an adjustment, and any request that has been received more than 2 business days after the rental has ended, will be declined.
