Driver - Understanding 3D Secure

Article mis à jour le 14/11/2024

3D Secure verification (also known as “Strong Customer Authentication” or SCA) is a security step required by banks for most online payments in Europe.

It helps prevent fraud by ensuring that the card is used only by its rightful cardholder.

How it works

When you pay for a rental on Getaround, your bank may ask you to verify your identity before authorizing the transaction. This step appears directly on the payment page.

The verification method varies depending on your bank: entering a unique code sent by SMS, confirming a notification in your banking app, or using a fingerprint on your phone.

Once you complete this step, your payment is confirmed instantly.

Common issues

If your payment fails during the 3D Secure step, please check the following:

  • Pop-up blockers: Ensure your browser allows pop-ups, as the 3D Secure validation window often opens as a pop-up.
  • Phone number: If your bank sends a verification code by SMS, make sure they sent it to the right phone number.
  • Browser/Device: If the verification screen doesn’t display correctly, please try again using another browser or device.
  • Bank setup: contact your bank to ensure your card is cleared for online payments and that 3D Secure is activated on your account.

For Business users

If you are using a payment card shared with your team and the bank requires 3D Secure verification, you will not be able to finalize the booking without immediate validation from the cardholder.

To limit these authentication requests, we recommend asking your bank for a corporate or lodged card, and adding Getaround to your list of trusted merchants.

Alternatively, you can use your personal payment card to pay for the rental.
